Chilled Water Stratification

Global Tanks offers the unique ability to provide a complete solution to chilled water stratification tank needs.

That is, not only do we design and produce the tank, but we are alone among tank manufacturers in our ability to design and precisely engineer flow-diffusing devices to suit your system.

Melbourne’s brand new Royal Children’s Hospital is kept cool using Global Tanks’ specifically-tailored chilled water stratification tanks.

New possibilities in cost, space and energy efficiency have been achieved in Springvale’s new Harvey Norman and IKEA complex, where chilled water stratification tanks fulfil a dual role as fire storage tanks. Global Tanks won the confidence of Factory Mutual insurers to realise this ambitious ideal.

Global Tanks’ clients install TES systems to achieve:

  • Reductions in energy costs
  • Up to 40% reductions in capital and maintenance costs
  • Improvement of chiller efficiency
  • Improved system endurance under extreme heat conditions
  • 15 Green Star Building credits

What is the purpose of Thermal Energy Storage (TES)?

By storing thermal energy during off-peak times, it is possible to drastically reduce energy requirements during peak hours.

Chillers run at night to charge the stratification tanks with chilled water, which is then used in the building’s air conditioning system during daytime peak hours.

What does the Chilled Water Stratification Tank do?

The remarkable aspect of TES is that the cool water and warm water are stored in the same tank at the same time.

Global Tanks engineers precise flow conditions to enable the water in the tank to be stratified into two distinct bodies of warm and cool water, separated by a thin transitional layer called a thermocline. The level of the thermocline rises as the tank is charged at night and descends during the day when the tank is discharged, but the overall water level stays the same.
